A digital isolator (Digital Isolation System), also known as a voltage insulator, is an electrical component used to eliminate ground loops by providing a coupling element between two physically seperated circuits. Digital isolators perform this coupling by converting an electrical signal from one form to another, typically voltage to optical or magnetic one, and vice versa. Such a device will typically allow two circuits to share information without the need for any direct electrical connection, allowing one circuit to remain isolated from the other.

The ISO7242MDW digital isolator is a 2 channel, 2 wire digital isolator designed to provide isolation between connected equipment with a maximum transmission rate of 4 Mbps. The isolator uses magnetically-coupled digital transmission to provide electrical isolation and prevent the effects of ground bouncing. The ISO7242MDW consists of two parts: an asynchronous serial port card and an isolated power supply. The signal conditioning and isolation circuit of the serial port card ensures a stable connection between the two systems, while the separate power supply ensures the port operates independently, preventing interference between the two systems.The working of the ISO7242MDW digital isolator is based on a technology called pulse-width modulation (PWM), which is a method of digitally encoding signals. The PWM signal consists of a certain amount of time-justified bits, whose duration depends on the data transmitted. The period of the PWM signal determines the maximum data rate of the digital isolator.When the device is connected to two digital systems, each system is linked to the other via the isolator. The PWM signal travels along the connection and is converted back and forth between the two systems. The device thus allows information to move from one system to the other without any direct connection between the two systems. This prevents the effect of ground bouncing and the interference of signals in each system.
