KA78T15 Application Field and Working Principle

KA78T15 is a three terminal linear positive voltage regulator. KA78T15 is the industry standard two-pin positive voltage regulator with voltage adjustable range of 1.2V-37V. It is designed to provide output current up to 1.5A. KA78T15 also features short circuit protection and thermal protection.

Working Principle

The working principle of KA78T15 is based on a negative feedback control system, which consists of three parts: an error amplifier, a reference voltage circuit, and a series pass element.

Firstly, the error amplifier senses the difference between the output voltage and a preset reference voltage and then controls the series pass element to adjust the output voltage according to the difference. The reference voltage circuit is an on-chip band-gap temperature stabilizing circuit that provides a temperature-independent reference voltage, eliminating the need for a costly external voltage reference.

The series pass element is a power transistor that is switched on and off by the error amplifier. When it is on, the output voltage is determined by the voltage across the series pass element. When it is off, the output voltage is held at a constant level by the output capacitor, and the error amplifier senses the output voltage.

The KA78T15 has thermal shutdown protection to prevent damage from overheating. When the temperature of the device exceeds the preset limit, the thermal protection circuit shuts down the power transistor, resulting in an output voltage of 0V.
