KA78R08CTU is a device belonging to the group of voltage regulators and more specifically of linear voltage regulators.

This device, produced by ON semiconductor, is a Single output, low dropout, high output current, lDO (Low Dropout) voltage regulator with shutdown, suitable for applications that require low quiescent current and high-ripple rejection.

It integrates an internal P-channel MOSFET that requires a very low quiescent current to supply its output and with the shutdown capability can be disconnected from the circuit for very low power consumption.

KA78R08CTU is designed to provide a regulated output voltage over a wide input voltage range, and it features an overload protection to prevent functionality failures.

The output voltage may be adjusted with a single resistor while the output current can reach up to 1.5 A. It also integrates thermal shutdown to prevent operation at excessive temperatures.

The regulator has a maximum input voltage of 8 V and a minimum operating temperature of -40 ºC up to 85 °C. The device is available in a TO-220-3L package and the output voltage range is adjustable from 1.2 to 6 V.

This current limit circuit works by monitoring the voltage drop across the MOSFET and when the voltage drops below a certain level, it limits the amount of current flowing through the device.

KA78R08CTU is suitable for a wide range of applications, including power management in mobile phones, portable electronics, digital still cameras and battery-powered devices. Other possible applications include level shifting, power supply for LCDs and buffers for line powered circuits.
