When an alternating current is applied, electrical charges are accumulated on the two metal plates by EDLC (electro–double-layer capacitor). The electrical charges are balanced when the applied voltage is removed, thereby preventing the capacitor from being discharged. The dielectric has the property of accumulating electrical charges, and the equivalent series resistance (ESR) of the capacitor is very low, which is beneficial for the application of high frequency power. Moreover, due to the specific geometry of the electrolyte and the dielectric, the relaxation time (time-constant) resulting from the internal electrical energy storage capacity is very long, realizing high reliability of Aluminum electrolytic capacitors.
