Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors, also known as wet electrolytic or liquid capacitors, are polarized and characterized by high capacity and high voltage ratings. They are constructed by stacking a series of aluminum foils and separators soaked with an electrolyte solution. Construction of Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are constructed from a stack of very thin aluminum foils (anode and cathode) separated by thin paper, plastic, or metalized plastic sheets, and soaked in a liquid electrolyte. They are held together in an aluminum casing, and, if appropriate, sealed with non-conductive epoxy.
The aluminum foils are etched with a pattern of tiny, closely spaced pores. These provide a large surface area for electron exchange and enable a high capacitance to be achieved in small volume. The electrolyte penetrates the porous surfaces of the foils and forms a thin oxide layer on their surfaces. The oxide layer acts as a dielectric and allows a layer of electrons to accumulate within the capacitor.
Application Field of Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are used in a wide variety of applications, including power supplies, audio equipment, amplifiers, oscillators, and various switching circuits. They are also used in home appliances, such as televisions, air conditioners, and washing machines.
In addition, aluminum electrolytic capacitors are ideal for high-frequency, high-voltage applications, such as those found in computers, telecommunication systems, and motor controllers. They are also used for dc filtering and decoupling, and in discharge circuits to control overvoltage.
Working Principle of Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors
When an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is biased with an electric voltage, it stores energy in the form of electrons accumulated in the oxide layer of the aluminum. The capacitance of the capacitor depends on the area of the aluminum foils, the spacing between them, and the dielectric constant of the electrolyte.
When the capacitor is discharged, the electrons are discharged from the capacitor, forming a path between the anode and the cathode. This charge is then dissipated as heat, and the energy stored in the capacitor is released.
The aluminum electrolytic capacitors are generally classified based on their temperature rating, which is the maximum temperature at which the capacitor can operate efficiently without degradation or failure.
