The KS8721B-TR is a single-channel Fast Ethernet Physical Layer transceiver (PHY). It is designed to interface between a Fast Ethernet MAC and an optical fiber, copper, or copper-over-fiber physical medium. It supports 100BASE-FX applications for both single-mode and multi-mode fiber and also supports 10BASE-T applications for category 3, 4 and 5 UTP cables. This PHY consists of a medium-access-controller (MAC) interface, a physical coding sublayer (PCS) and physical media attachment (PMA) sublayer.

Aimed at networking, KS8721B-TR application fields includes automation, control, customer premises equipment (CPE) for for FTTH applications, modem, terminal server and digital video applications. The KS8721B-TR PHY supports idle detection, double-speed/quad-speed auto-negotiation as well as multiple half-duplex operation and energy saving modes, which greatly facilitate its use.

Working Principle

The basic working principle of the KS8721B-TR PHY is that it converts digital data transmitted by the MAC into signal form suitable for the transmission medium, or converts signals received through the transmission medium into digital data. As special attention needs to be paid to signal integrity when transmitting or receiving data signals, the KS8721B-TR PHY provides several optional signal processing functions which is to help ensure robust data communication.

Firstly, the KS8721B-TR PHY generates a signal whose frequency is accurately synchronized with the received signal (clock synchronization). Secondly, the data received from the medium is averaged up to simplify the interpretation of the data (data equalization). Lastly, the data is transmitted with a moderate level of error correction (error correction coding, ECC). Together these features help to ensure robust data communication, even under noisy conditions.

At the transmitter side, the KS8721B-TR PHY transmits 10 Mbps data at half-duplex mode and either 100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps full-duplex mode using the IEEE802.3 compliant medium-independent interface (MII) which is compliant with the IEEE802.3u standard (100 BASE-FX). The KS8721B-TR PHY also supports several modes including idle-detection, energy-detect, auto-negotiation and double-speed/quad-speed auto-negotiation to realize higher speed transmission.

At the receiver side, the KS8721B-TR PHY recovers data from the transmission medium at rates up to 100 Mbps, 1000 Mbps. The data is received from either copper or optical fiber media which are operated in single-mode or multi-mode. Optical fiber media may operate in full-duplex or half-duplex mode. The data is first passed through a decision threshold and then passed through multiple filters to eliminate noise.

Once the data is recovered, it can then be demodulated with a suitable coding scheme. The PHY supports both 10BASE-T and 100BASE-T coding schemes. Error correction can be done on the received data to improve accuracy in noisy environments. Finally, the recovered data is passed to the MAC interface for further processing.

KS8721B-TR PHY provide a fast, reliable and efficient communication for networking application fields. It supports low power consumption requirements to minimize power consumption and at the same time reduce the system cost. It is an ideal solution for Ethernet connectivity for applications such as automation and control, CPE for FTTH applications, modems, terminal servers and digital video applications.
