The KS8721BI is a 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX Ethernet Physical Layer (PHY) transceiver that provides media access control (MAC) with an embedded 10/100 Mbps auto-negotiation capability. It is an ideal device for incorporating 10/100 Mbps Ethernet physical layer functions in a system design. The KS8721BI supports full/half duplex operation over both 10BASE-T and 100BASE-TX media.

The KS8721BI is housed in an industry standard 32-pin quad-flat no-lead (QFN) package. It is a single-chip device with a low power consumption design including power down and sleep modes. The integrated analog and digital circuitry is designed to meet the broadband specifications of IEEE Std 802.3 and IEEE Std 802.3u, as well as the copper transceiver specifications of Ethernet, ATM and FDDI. In addition, the integrated medium attachment unit (MAU) supports auto-negotiation and 100/10 Mbps half/full link configurations.

The KS8721BI transceiver supports two types of media access control (MAC) methods. The first is a CSMA/CD algorithm that implements the carrier sense mechanism of Ethernet. This method works with both 10/100 Mbps speeds and automatically switches between the two speeds if one of them fails. The second MAC method is polling, which is a more efficient method for networks with large number of connected clients. It is also used for networks with multiple speeds. The KS8721BI makes use of the additional control information to manage the media access control for each connected client.

The KS8721BI supports a wide range of additional features such as auto-negotiation, auto-detection of link failure, auto-crossover, auto-polarity correction, jumbo frame support and adjustable link pulse quality. In addition, the integrated flow control and broadcast storm prevention help reduce network congestion and minimize packet loss. The integrated LED indicators provide immediate feedback on network status, allowing much easier network management and troubleshooting.

The KS8721BI transceiver\'s integrated analog and digital circuitry is designed to provide optimal performance and efficient power management. The on-chip 16-bit microcontroller handles address and control functions as well as the media access control (MAC) layer. All of the physical layer functions are handled by the integrated analog and digital transceiver function blocks. The transceiver is powered by a 3.3V DC supply.
