KS8721CL is a single-chip solution for a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet physical layer interface. It is a member of a small family of single-chip physical interface devices produced by Micrel. KS8721CL is designed to interface with 10Mbps of differential signal output by a data-link management IC and 5V signal levels. It can automatically detect 10Base-T or 100Base-TX signal input and indicate signal loopback or no connection at the remote end. It also includes pin-selectable line auto-polarity configuration and status. Special circuitry is also provided for signal cable type and length detection.
A major application of KS8721CL is in environments where low noise and high signal integrity is a desirable feature. Working Principle
KS8721CL operates as a single-chip physical layer interface by utilizing three main components: the physical signaling bit-rate adaptive adaptive receiver, encoder/decoder, and clock recovery. These components are responsible for determining and converting the physical layer electrical signals into high-speed bits (data).
The Adaptive Receiver is responsible for receiving or detecting incoming data and managing the Ethernet bit-rate adaptation. It adapts the receiver technique to match the incoming data bit-rate. The Decoder reverses the received data and prepares it for further processing. The Clock Recovery component reconstructs the clock information coming from the received data and transmits the clock to the receiver.
The encoder/decoder converts the data from the encoder and from the receiver into the specific channel coding used by the physical layer protocol. This includes error correction and data verification. Finally, a MII (Media Independent Interface) is used to handle the transfer of data packets between the physical layer protocol and the MAC layer. The MII comprises a number of registers for configuration and control of the PHY.
KS8721CL also integrates Power Management and Sleep modes to reduce power consumption. The device is fully engineered for low-power and low-voltage operation. This ensures that power is efficiently used while ensuring compatibility with a range of network consistency requirements.
