Power management integrated circuits (PMICs) are increasingly seen as a key enabling technology for the mobile device industry as they offer consistent and efficient power supply solutions to enhance device reliability and battery life. The L6393D is one type of power management IC that is dedicated to driving MOSFETs and IGBTs. This IC is ideally suited for the design of SMPS, motor regulation and DC-DC converters due to its low switch-on resistance and temperature-stable performance. So what is the application field and working principle of the L6393D?

Application Field
The L6393D has been designed for MOSFETs and IGBTs, especially in DC-DC converters, switch-mode power supplies, SMPS AC/DC converters, umbilical cord monitors and motor control applications. It is characterized by its low voltage drop, capability to drive MOSFETs and IGBTs up to 600V, high operating temperature of 175⁰C, and integrated inrush current limitation to limit the peak boot-up current without overloading the power supply. It also features an adjustable off-timer and shoot-through protection, which makes it ideal for various power management applications.

Working Principle
The L6393D has two input pins, plus IN and minus IN. When logic is applied to the gate driver\'s high side pin, an internal pre-driver stage quickly switches on the high side FET. The low side FET is switched on by the comparer when the voltage across the bootstrap network is greater than the high side FETs Vgs. By controlling the drive current, the pre-driver stage safely switches off the high side FET.

The Gate driver also includes a signal for shoot-through protection and an internal pre-delay to limit the peak boot-up current. The internal comparator within the L6393D monitors the voltage across the bootstrap network and the external capacitor to generate a logic signal for Shoot-Through protection. When logic high is applied to the Gate Driver\'s minus IN pin, the internal pre-driver stage quickly activates the low side FET. Both high and low side FETs are then switched on for a period of time until the off-timer is triggered by an external signal.

The input signal can be controlled by an external timer to enable a dynamic current limit. This is achieved by configuring an external capacitor in a workable range and connecting it to an external timing resistor. When an input signal is applied to the Gate Driver, the capacitor charges up and the timer avoids shoot-through conditions by controlling the slew rate of the low side FET\'s on and off control.

The L6393D is designed with current sense circuitry to monitor the current flow on the low side FET and to limit the maximum current even when the current limit is not activated. When a high current pulse is detected, the low side FET is switched off automatically by the current sense circuitry to protect the circuit against potential damage.

To ensure that the L6393D operates at its optimum temperature, the gate driver includes an internal thermal overload protection. This protection limits the power dissipation of the device by eliminating current surges when the junction temperature is close to the chip\'s thermal limit. In this way, the device can better regulate the load current and protect against overheating.

In conclusion, the L6393D is an ideal power management IC for driving MOSFETs and IGBTs up to 600V. It is designed with an adjustable off-timer, shoot-through protection and thermal overload protection. The integrated inrush current limitation also prevents the device from being overloaded during startup.
