Working Principle of L7815ABV-DG

The working principle of the L7815ABV-DG is quite simple.It consists of three pins; a Ground (GND) terminal, Input voltage (Vin) terminal, and Output voltage (Vout) terminal. The ground terminal is always connected to the ground or negative side of the power supply while input voltage is connected in between the positive side and the negative side of the power supply. Output voltage terminal is then connected to the circuit to get regulated voltage.The operation of the device starts when it is powered with input voltage and a current flows through the device to get regulated voltage at the output side. This current is controlled by the zener diode, series resistor, and an integrated cut-off transistor. The zener diode works on ‘zener effect’ which refers to the process of controlling the voltage across the diode, to get a constant voltage drop. The series resistor works to absorb the excess current, so as to maintain the device in its linear region and transistor turns off completely when the output current reaches a certain level, preventing further increase in the output current.In summary, the L7815ABV-DG is a three terminal linear voltage regulator designed to provide a fixed 15V output voltage with an input voltage up to 35V.
