The LD2985AM18R is an adjustable, linear voltage regulator that offers wide input range while drawing very low current. It can be used in a variety of applications requiring precise voltage regulation in both positive and negative voltage systems. By using a few external components, it can be configured to regulate a wide range of voltages, from 0.5V to 18V, with a maximum output current of 500mA. The LD2985AM18R is a monolithic integrated circuit, integrating a pass transistor, an adjustable voltage reference, and a few additional components into a single package. It is designed to be used in high-voltage battery-operated systems, as well as for applications such as motor controllers and power supplies.The LD2985AM18R works by using a voltage reference and feedback loop, which is used to adjust the output voltage of the regulator based on the input voltage and output current supplied. R1, connected from the output pin to the adjust pin, sets the output voltage of the voltage regulator according to the following formula: Vout = Vref × [1 + (R1/R2)]. The Vref, or reference voltage, is set internally to 0.185V, and can be adjusted with an external voltage divider. The R2 resistor sets the output current limit, and should be connected from the adjust pin to ground. In addition, a bypass capacitor of typically 0.1μF should be connected across the output pin.The LD2985AM18R offers excellent performance, with an output current of up to 500mA and a maximum input voltage of 18V. It features excellent power supply rejection, low quiescent current, and low dropout voltage. It also has thermal shut down protection, as well as short circuit and output over-current protection.
