The STMicroelectronics LIS3DSH is a motion sensing digital accelerometer compatible with a variety of advanced applications including vibration monitoring, positional sensing, motion-controlled games or gyroscopic mouse functions. This versatile, digital 3-axis accelerometer can measure acceleration on 3 different axes but also offers advanced features such as embedded software filtering algorithms. The LIS3DSH is the perfect device for measuring acceleration when mounted on drones, robots or other moving objects.
The LIS3DSH features a low-power, full-scale acceleration range of ±2 +/- 16g. It can be used in a wide variety of applications including industrial automation, mobile phones, navigational equipment, consumer electronics and robotics systems. It is also suitable for applications such as vibration monitoring, positional sensing, and motion-controlled games or gyroscopic mouse functions. The LIS3DSH contains several specialized embedded software-based filtering algorithms to help acquire and filter data, as well as low-power operation to enable longer battery life in mobile applications.
The LIS3DSH also features temperature compensation for improved accuracy and faster response time. Furthermore, the device is equipped with an additional pin that can be used to select between different output data rates. This feature can be used to lower power consumption and reduce power consumption when inactive. Other features include two I2C/SPI digital output modes, a power down mode, an onboard temperature sensor and a three assessment vibration detection circuit.
The LIS3DSH works on the principle of mems-based accelerometer technology. This technology enables measurements of acceleration with two sensors of opposite polarity and corrects for environmental conditions (such as gravity, temperature) to ensure accurate measurements. The accelerometer works by converting an applied force into an electrical signal, which is then output in the form of digital data. When a force is applied to the sensing element themselves, the element will vibrate and create small, analog voltages proportional to the force. This analog voltage is then converted into digital data by the electronic circuitry.
In order to monitor the motion of an object, the accelerometer must be properly mounted. This includes the selection of the correct mounting location, and orienting the accelerometer along the desired axis. Depending on the application, accelerometers are powered either by a battery or a transducer. If the accelerometer is powered by a transducer, a power signal must also be provided to the accelerometer in order to operate properly. Once the accelerometer is properly powered and mounted, it is ready for use in an application.
