Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are a type of capacitor that uses an electrolyte, usually a liquid or a polarized solid, as one of its plates to achieve a larger capacitance per unit volume than other types of capacitors. The most commonly used electrolyte is an aqueous solution of ammonium nitrate. They are widely used in electronic applications due to their compactness, low cost, and reliability. Application Field

Working Principle

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors use an electrolyte and two aluminum plates, connected in parallel, as the plates for the capacitor. The key component of this capacitor is the electrolyte. The electrolyte forms an oxide layer on the surface of the aluminum electrode, creating a capacitive dielectric that stores energy. The thicker the oxide layer, the higher the capacitance. When a voltage is applied to the capacitor, electrons flow through the electrolyte and onto the surface of the electrodes, forming a current. The thicker the oxide layer, the less current is required to recharge the capacitor.

The aluminum electrolytic capacitor also has a long life which is rated in terms of number of operations or hours of operation. The longevity of these capacitors is related to their leakage current, which is the amount of current that the capacitor loses over time. Lower leakage current means that the electrical charge in the capacitor will last longer, resulting in a longer life.
