Overview
LM239AD/E4 is an integrated comparator in Linear’s family of CMOS and TTL compatible Logic products. It integrates two comparators with a common output stage thus giving dual comparator functionalities. It has three operating power modes- Normal, Low (1/3), High (3X) and Ultra (5X) High. It is available in commercial temperature range as well as in industrial temperature range and is also available in single as well as in dual versions.

Working principle
The LM239AD/E4 has two independent comparators, A and B, which share the same common output stage. Comparator A is used to compare an input with a reference voltage and when it detects an input voltage higher or lower than the reference voltage it will set the output state high or low. Comparator B is used to compare an input with a different reference voltage and will set the output state high or low depending on the voltage ratio. Both comparison stages can be operated in power modes, Normal, Low (1/3), and High (3X) up to Maximum Power. Ultra High Power mode is available when operated at 5X power level.
The LM239AD/E4 can be operated in two different modes, either in comparator or as a differential amplifier for greater accuracy. When operated in differential amplifier mode, a second reference voltage is applied across the two comparator inputs to effectively increase the sensitivity of the comparator to the input signal.
The LM239AD/E4 is protected from errors caused by high voltage transients and current surges by the two built-in protection diodes. It also includes an open-drain output which allows for pull-up resistors to be connected externally in order to reduce power dissipation.
