Introduction

The LM2574HVM-ADJ is a high-efficiency and adjustable step-down switching regulator, part of the TSM Xplorer™ family of non-involutionary power components, designed to deliver up to 2A of output current. This device features an easy-to-use adjustable controller and integrated power MOSFETs, making it an ideal solution for a helpful variety of step-down (buck) applications. It offers the possibility to set and adjust an output voltage value between 0.8V and 42V using a standard external resistor divider resistor and is a negligible current version of the standard version of the LM2574 series. The LM2574HVM-ADJ is available in 8 lead SOIC, 8 lead DIP and 6 lead DIP package versions.

Application Field

Thanks to its inherent design and advanced control techniques, the LM2574HVM-ADJ is well-suited for a variety of low-voltage, high-current applications. These applications include automotive and computer products, battery charging and voltage tracking, medical and industrial systems, point of load (POL) dc-dc regulation and power supply regulation. The device can be applied in any position where it is necessary to program and constantly maintain the output voltage. Furthermore, the device is extremely efficient (up to 90%), providing excellent power conversion in different conditions. The LM2574HVM-ADJ is specifically designed to support the requirements of automotive applications. This device features a junction temperature range of -40°C to 125°C, in extreme temperature ranges the device works perfectly with no compromise in performance. This feature gives designers a greater flexibility to use the device in different environments. Acceptable for a variety of applications, the LM2574HVM-ADJ also offers low quiescent current (30mV TYP) and low dropout voltage (200mV TYP output currents up to 1.5A). It also offers over-temperature protection that helps to ensure safe and reliable system operation.

Working Principle

The device is designed to operate as a voltage regulator, with an internal synchronous buck switch, which is driven by a number of internal clock pulses. The internal oscillator is synchronized to the input voltage and adjusts its frequency to maintain a constant pulse-width-modulated (PWM) signal. The internal synchronous switch MOSFETS are operated in the PWM mode during the peak current periods, a latch will occur at the minimum duty cycle in order to prevent instantaneous spike currents. The current-sense amplifier provides current mode control to establish a well-defined current limit. The voltage regulator maintains the regulated output voltage with internal feedback coupled to a low-voltage, low-bias error amplifier, which controls the internal synchronous switch duty cycle. The power switch mode allows high efficiency levels, which results in lower power dissipation than linear regulators.
