Power management integrated circuits (PMICs) are necessary to efficiently manage systems’ power in order to optimize their performance, reliability and lifetime. Gate drivers are a PMIC subfamily, consisting of specialty ICs devoted to providing extra protection against power supply noise and also increasing the efficiency of power MOSFET switching devices. The LM25101AMRX/NOPB is a high current gate driver from Texas Instruments, aimed at solving those two exact issues.

The LM25101AMRX/NOPB IC is able to withstand up to +/-20V of high voltage spikes, enhancing the protection and reliability of the power MOSFETs. The onboard isolated bootstrap capability also ensures a high level of safety and protection from return-current-induced spikes. In addition, it features a wide operating voltage range of 5V to 18V, provides a high peak output current of +/- 4A and a typical threshold voltage of 1.1V.

The LM25101AMRX/NOPB is perfect for either parallel- or half-bridge topologies since it has two independent logic-level inputs and can generate a correspondingly higher output voltage at lower switch-voltage levels. This maximizes the load current, improving the overall system efficiency. Moreover, a dead-time control (DTC) switch is included in the IC, which minimizes the switching losses, up to a total of 200ns of combined dead-time. As an extra protection feature, the LM25101AMRX/NOPB also has open-drain fault (ODF) flags which indicate internal temperature and device overcurrent and/or undervoltage fault conditions.

On the LM25101AMRX/NOPB, current sense and supply pins have been designed in order to maintain the correct dynamic resistance of the power MOSFETs’ gate-source, which ensures the proper functioning of the device. Specifically, the CSP pin guarantees thesource pin voltage will never exceed the CS pin voltage. This, along with the control of the gate charge, allows for an optimal gate drive of the MOSFET.

The LM25101AMRX/NOPB, in spite of its small 5mm x 7.5mm footprint, is also able to act as a buffer and/or a translator capable of extending a system’s life-span and reliability. To sum up, it is the perfect choice for high current gate driver applications, ideal for switching power supplies, motor drives, DC-to-DC converters or high voltage current sinks.
