Working Principle
The LM2575HVM-15/NOPB is a pulse width modulation (PWM) switching regulator. This device uses two switches, an input filter and an output filter to regulate the output voltage. The switches are known as the high-side switch, Q1 and the low-side switch, Q2. When the high-side switch, Q1 is turned on, current flows from the input, Vin to the output, Vo, and it continues to flow until the low-side switch, Q2 is turned on. During this period, the charge is stored in the output capacitor, COUT and the output voltage is regulated to a certain value.
The control circuit senses the output voltage and compares it with the reference voltage. If the output voltage is lower than the reference voltage, the high-side switch, Q1, is turned on and the current flows from the input to the output. On the other hand, if the output voltage is higher than the reference voltage, the low-side switch, Q2 is turned on and the current flows from the output back to the input.
The frequency of the switching between the high-side and the low-side switch is determined by an oscillator and it can be adjusted by an external resistor, RT. This switching frequency is generally set between 100 kHz and 1.2 MHz. Moreover, the duty cycle of the switching can be changed by a pulse width modulator (PWM). The PWM changes the duty cycle to maintain the output voltage and maximize the efficiency.
