LM2575S-3.3 Application Field and Working Principle

The LM2575S-3.3 is an adjustable step-down switching regulator from National Semiconductor designed for high efficiency and low quiescent current operation. It is part of National Semiconductor\'s MICRO-CAP series of products, and it belongs to the PMIC (Power Management IC) group of Voltage Regulators, in the specific DC-DC Switching Regulators family.Since the LM2575S provides a fixed output of 3.3V that is adjustable within a certain range, it is excellent for powering digital circuits, microcontrollers and other low-voltage applications. It is a great solution for all portable or remote installations that require batteries, as it offers an great power efficiency that enables long battery life, especially when designed with the corresponding National Semiconductor chip N-Channel MOSFETs, for example the UPF175 Envelope Tracking FET.The LM2575S-3.3 implements a step-down switching regulator based on a power MOSFET, that provides an adjustable output voltage of 3.3V, usually in a TO-220 package. It is designed to require only a minimum of external components, while offering very high efficiency and low minimal quiescent current.The whole working principle is based on the comparison of the input voltages, adjusting the operating frequency of the switch based on a feedback loop. The sync pin of the IC allows to synchronize the switching frequency with an external component, if desired.The IC includes an integrated oscillator that allows to set the switching frequency up to 500 kHz with a minimum duty cycle of 10%, on normally up to 90% (depending on the input/output voltages difference), in order to preserve a high efficiency. The output voltage is controlled by an external resistor divider, connected between the output voltage pin and the compensation pin, so the output voltage can be adjusted within a certain range. The output voltage accuracy is mainly determined by the external feedback components, but it is assured to be no more than 0.8% accuracy.Finally, due to its high efficiency, excellent line and load regulation, low ripple, low minimum quiescent current, excellent thermal protection and high input voltage range, the LM2575S-3.3 is an excellent solution for all the applications that require an adjustable output of 3.3V.
