LM2575T-15/NOPB Application Field and Working Principle

The LM2575T-15/NOPB voltage regulator is a step-down switching regulator device. It falls under the category of Power Management Integrated Circuits (PMIC), designed for DC DC switching regulator applications. This voltage regulator device is designed for a maximum input voltage of 35V and output voltage of 15V. It features very low quiescent current, low operating frequency and high efficiency, in addition to having excellent thermal performance.

Working principle

The LM2575T-15/NOPB is an adjustable fixed-frequency pulse width modulation (PWM) step-down regulator. The device features a high peak current capability for driving large capacitive loads, and an internal current limit, thermal shutdown, and overvoltage protection (OVP) circuitry. Its high efficiency operation is achieved due to low dropout voltage and low quiescent current.

The transistor switch within the LM2575 is turned on, which draws current from the input source. This current is then filtered through an inductor and converted into an output voltage. As output voltage rises, the internal comparator detects the difference between the actual output voltage and the reference voltage. When this difference exceeds the error voltage, the transistor is automatically turned off and prevents further current flow. Thus, the output voltage is accurately maintained at the desired level.

For current limiting protection, the LM2575T-15/NOPB utilizes pulse-by-pulse current limiting, in which the current limit is triggered by monitoring the voltage across a sense resistor in the feedback loop. The current limit is initiated if the voltage across the resistor exceeds a specified threshold. This feature ensures that the output load current is maintained at a safe and steady level.

To protect the device from thermal runaway and overcurrent, the LM2575T-15/NOPB also incorporates a thermal shutdown and overvoltage protection (OVP) circuitry. In the case of thermal runaway, the device shuts down and the output will remain open until the temperature is reduced and the thermal protection latch is reset. If the output voltage exceeds the OVP limit, the output is disabled until the OVP limit is reduced.
