LM2590HVSX-ADJ/NOPB Application Field and Working Principle

The LM2590HVSX-ADJ/NOPB voltage regulator from Texas Instruments is part of the PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) family and is a member of the DC DC switching regulators category. It is programmable and intended for use in several applications such as Data Power/Telephone, Digital Photo/Camera as well as automotive and computing systems where battery-powered operation is desired.The LM2590HVSX-ADJ/NOPB is based on a high switching frequency step-down regulator which can be used to convert any input voltage ranging from 4.75 to 26 VDC down to a regulated voltage as low as 1.3 VDC. The regulator then efficiently maintains it over an extensive range of temperatures, load conditions and line changes. The voltage is adjustable up to 12V with a single resistor, and up to 22V with an external voltage induced on the adjustment input.The LM2590HVSX-ADJ/NOPB has a highly efficient switching frequency of up to 500kHz available which is suitable to minimize the size of components used in power supply design. The device combines a current mode controller with an external MOSFET output stage to provide high load current accuracy and good line and load regulation.The regulator has a wide array of features such as external voltage sensing, under voltage lockout, current limit and thermal protection, as well as Soft-Start and forced continuous conduction mode for current mode control.The device is also designed with excellent EMI/EMC features including a ripple blanking circuit to reduce the amplitude of high frequency pulses from the input, allowing reliable operation with sources that produces high noise pulses. These features make the LM2590HVSX-ADJ/NOPB an ideal choice for portable consumer applications.The LM2590HVSX-ADJ/NOPB has an operational temperature range of - 40°C to +125°C, and a wide variety of package types are available to fit a range of application needs.The LM2590HVSX-ADJ/NOPB is a straightforward and accurate switchmode regulator, which uses a simple and reliable voltage mode control-concept. The output voltage is compared with the voltage at the error-amplifier input so that the error-amplifier output and the reference-adjust input control the comparator- and the modulator-output.To ensure good response and to prevent oscillations, the output voltage must be (internally) compensated. This guarantees that the switch-mode-controller draws a nearly constant amount of current whatever the value of the output voltage, so the current will not explode and create any overshooting; the switch being in the continuous conduction mode.The LM2590HVSX-ADJ/NOPB switchmode regulator has excellent efficiency over the entire input voltage and load current ranges. With its small size and excellent cost efficiency, and its superb value delivered to customers, the LM2590HVSX-ADJ/NOPB is suitable for a broad range of applications.
