LM2595SX-ADJ/NOPB Application Field and Working Principle

The LM2595SX-ADJ (Adjustable) and LM2595SX-NOPB (Non-selectionable) Step-Down voltage Regulators from Texas Instruments are monolithic, switching regulator ICs designed to convert a higher voltage DC supply, such as a 12V battery, to a lower voltage DC regulated output. This type of system, referred to as a buck converter, is the most universally used circuit topology for a DC-DC voltage regulator. The devices can be used to deliver a current output of up to 3A, with an adjustable output voltage from 1.23V to 37V. The LM2595SX family offer higher efficiency when compared to linear regulators and feature a wide operating input range of 4.4V to 40V. This works by simply fluctuating the turn-on and off period of the MOSFET, which in turn adjusts the duty cycle delivered to a low-pass filter – more specifically an inductor and capacitor – and as a result, the final output voltage.
