The LM2595T-12 is a discontinuous conduction mode (DCM), step-down, switch-mode voltage regulator. It provides a highly efficient and low-cost alternative to linear regulators, and can power loads up to 12A with an input voltage between 5V to 42V. It also features a Forced PWM operation mode (FPWM), which provides excellent regulation over a wide range of load and line conditions. Additionally, the LM2595T-12 is capable of providing a low-noise output voltage, making it ideal for powering high-performance, audio and RF circuits.

Working Principle

The LM2595T-12 works on the principle of switching-mode regulation. It uses an integrated pulse-width modulation (PWM) control circuit to vary the switching frequency and duty cycle of external power MOSFET transistors, allowing precise adjustment of output voltage levels. The advantage of this technique is the ability to provide high output currents with low ripple and noise, while at the same time being able to handle wide input voltages and very fast transient response.

The LM2595T-12 features an adjustable output voltage, adjustable soft-start, adjustable overvoltage protection, and short-circuit protection. The adjustable soft-start feature makes the device immune to inrush current during turn-on and allows for a very low inrush current during turn-off. The adjustable overload protection feature allows for protected operation against overloads and short circuits. Additionally, the device has built-in thermal protection and fault signalling for safe operation.

The LM2595T-12 also features a high-frequency oscillator and is capable of switching its external transistors at frequencies up to 1MHz, allowing it to be used in compact, high-efficiency designs.
