The LM2597HVN-3.3/NOPB is a three-terminal, monolithic, adjustable peak current-mode, DC/DC switching regulator, which is ideal for cost-sensitive applications. It is specifically designed to deliver a current limited output with minimal external components, making it well-suited for battery-powered systems. This device is capable of running at a maximum duty cycle of 99.5%. The peak current feature allows for very small external components for most supplies, and allows for higher efficiency and better line/load regulation.

The LM2597HVN-3.3/NOPB is suitable for use in a wide range of applications including computer and consumer power supplies, notebook and battery chargers, portable instruments, and other switch mode power supplies. Working Principle

The LM2597HVN-3.3/NOPB operates by controlling the duty cycle and peak current of an external N-channel MOSFET, to maintain a regulated output voltage. This is done through an external sense resistor, which gives feedback on the output voltage and allows the device to adjust the switching duty cycle to maintain the output voltage. The voltage and current feedback signals are then fed to a comparator circuit. This circuit compares the feedback signals to the internal reference voltage, which is determined by the output voltage setting on the voltage adjustment pin. When the feedback signals exceed the reference voltage, the output of the comparator turns off the MOSFET and reduces the duty cycle, which reduces the output voltage. When the feedback signals drop below the reference voltage, the output of the comparator turns on the MOSFET and increases the duty cycle to increase the output voltage.

The LM2597HVN-3.3/NOPB also includes a current limiting circuit, which is used to protect the MOSFET from over-current conditions. This circuit monitors the current through the MOSFET and shuts off the MOSFET when the current exceeds the current limit set point. The current limit also reduces the peak current in the MOSFET, which allows for very low switching losses.
