The LM2623EV is a high voltage, high efficiency, DC/DC and AC/DC converter from Texas Instruments. It is part of the Simple Switcher family, a series of economical, highly efficient synchronous buck regulators that provide an array of output voltage programs. Designed specifically for use in off-line converter applications, the LM2623EV is ideal for DC/DC and AC/DC converters in residential and commercial applications such as single-phase power supplies, highway vehicles and industrial controllers.
The core of the LM2623EV is its proprietary Simple Switcher topology, which couples the voltage-mode control loop of pulse-width modulated (PWM) regulators to the hysteretic control loop of a simple on/off switch regulator. This integration eliminates complex external compensation components, which makes the LM2623EV very easy to design in. This makes high efficiency and robust performance easily achievable, even when operating at light loads or when subjected to wide temperature extremes.
In addition, the LM2623EV features a very low operating frequency of just 300kHz (typ), allowing the converter to be implemented in a small environment using low impact, cost-effective components. The low operating frequency further reduces electromagnetic interference (EMI) significantly, which makes electrical emissions compliant with global standards. A 210V peak voltage rating ensures that the converter supports a wide range of typical input voltages while providing flexibility for future expansion of the input voltage range.
The LM2623EV consists of two stages: an input power switch and an output power switch, which are connected in series between the input voltage source and the output load. The input power switch acts as a variable resistor, setting the input voltage to the output power switch. As the input voltage changes, the duty cycle of the output power switch is adjusted accordingly. As a result, the LM2623EV produces a fixed output voltage regardless of changes in the input voltage.
The LM2623EV also has an adjustable current limit feature that provides over-current protection of the output power switch. When the output load current exceeds the current limit, the LM2623EV shuts down and safely latches both the switches off until the fault is cleared. This feature prevents major damage to the converter due to sudden peak current demands.
A unique feature of the LM2623EV is its integrated low-side switch, which allows the device to directly drive an external power MOSFET. This eliminates the need for a secondary ORing MOSFET and makes the device suitable for use in harsh environment applications such as off-board automotive systems or harsh industrial conditions.The integrated low-side switch also allows the design of a single-component bridgeless AC input power factor correction (PFC) topology, which provides an efficient and cost-effective solution for AC-DC power conversion.
In addition, the LM2623EV has an integrated soft-start circuit that reduces inrush current and eliminates overshoot during startup. This feature provides a smooth transition from no-load to full-load operation, eliminating the need for large output capacitors.An optional spread spectrum frequency modulation circuit can be used to reduce noise and harmonic distortion.
The LM2623EV can be used in a wide variety of applications including Battery Charger, Power Factor Corrector (PFC), Lighting, Multimedia Accessory, Outsourced Power, AC-DC/DC-AC Conversion, Industrial, Home Appliance, Automotive, and Energy Measurement devices.The LM2623EV is available in a thermally enhanced, clip-bonded 3-pin SOT-23 package, making it suitable for use in a wide range of low-power SMPS applications.
