The LM2673SX-ADJ is a synchronous step down switching regulator, housed in a standard 8-pin SOIC package. It is a member of the Texas Instruments LM2673 family, which is a series of switching regulator solutions aimed at high-efficiency, low noise and high-current applications. It comes with an adjustable voltage regulation range and provides low noise operation through its low-dropout voltage. Additionally, it offers automatic shutdown, best-in-class light-load efficiency, low-noise operation, adjustable output voltage with a wide range of output voltage settings and a wide input voltage range of 2.85V to 17V. The LM2673SX-ADJ is suitable for a variety of applications, such as 12V output supply for data converters, power management in distributed power supplies, voltage scaling for microprocessors and other point-of-load (POL) regulation applications.
The LM2673SX-ADJ switching regulator converts an input voltage to a regulated output voltage through the use of an external power switch. It monitors the output voltage and adjusts the duty cycle of the power switch to maintain a regulated output voltage. The LM2673SX-ADJ has synchronous rectified power MOSFETs on either side of the input/output transformer, which reduce the cost and complexity of the solution. The LM2673SX-ADJ operates from a wide input voltage range of 2.85V to 17V and provides an adjustable output range of 0.8V to 12V typical. The LM2673SX-ADJ is designed with a synchronous current mode architecture that provides a wide range of load current, up to 6A.
The LM2673SX-ADJ has an internally set switching frequency of 300kHz. The frequency can be adjusted using a frequency synchronization pin that allows the user to synchronize the switching frequency with an external clock. This allows for easy parallel operation, as there will be no interaction between the devices. It also enables frequency dithering to reduce EMI, as the output frequency can be modulated to reduce the harmonic content of the output voltage.
The LM2673SX-ADJ has a circuit which enables the user to program the output voltage, without having to use an external resistor. This pin-selectable feature is set by voltage-dividers, that can be programmed for any output voltage between 0.8V and 12V. The output voltage is programmed either through a +5V or +3.3V reference voltage. The pin-selectable voltage program ensures the user can have an optimized application design.
The LM2673SX-ADJ also has several other features. The stop pin provides an indication to the power supply system when it has entered a fault and needs resetting, for improved system reliability. The device also features an auto-restart circuit which automatically re-starts the regulator when the fault is cleared. The total shutdown current is less than 8uA, which helps to optimize the power efficiency of the system.
The LM2673SX-ADJ also has a high cycle-by-cycle current-limit circuit, which provides a continuous current-limit protection for the MOSFETs and help reduce the stress on low-cost MOSFETs. Its over-temperature protection circuit takes into account both the ambient temperature and the power MOSFETs temperature. The device operates from a wide input voltage range of 2.85V to 17V, with a maximum 12V output voltage. The LM2673SX-ADJ is available in a standard 8-pin SOIC package and is suitable for a variety of applications.
