The LM2678SX-ADJ is a member of the family of low-cost, high-performance, step-down monolithic switching regulator designed to accept wide voltage input range. With its built-in 0.3A switch current limit, the IC is able to deliver a 1A output current. The IC is adjustable and provides a guaranteed 1.5% accuracy for output voltage range from 1.2V to 10.5V. The IC also features a very low quiescent current, over-current protection and active low shutdown mode.

LM2678SX-ADJ Application Field and Working Principle

The LM2678SX-ADJ is a DC/DC step-down regulator with an internal current-limited switch for variable output voltage, making it ideal for a variety of DC/DC power applications. The device is designed specifically to meet the needs of distributed power architectures with multiple output points. It is suitable for a variety of loads, particularly in applications such as personal and portable electronics, automotive, industrial control, and battery operated systems. Since it provides a guaranteed 1.5% accurate output voltage, the device is ideal for high performance power supplies.

In the circuit, the LM2678 SX-ADJ switch is connected between an input voltage VIN and an output voltage VOUT that is adjustable from 1.2V to 10.5V. The IC includes an internal feedback circuit which is used to compare the output voltage to a reference voltage, resulting in a voltage regulation loop. When the output voltage falls below the reference voltage, the output switch is enabled and current is supplied to the output. When the output voltage exceeds the reference voltage, the output switch is disabled and current is not supplied. The amount of current supplied to the output is limited by the current-limited switch. This current-limit is adjustable from 0.3A to over 1000 A using external components.

The quiescent current of the LM2678 SX-ADJ is very low, typically 250 uA in active operation. Moreover, it can also operate in a shutdown mode. When the control pin is set to logic “low”, the device is placed in a low power mode in which the output switch and the reference voltage are both disabled. The quiescent current consumption in this case is typically 3 µA.

LM2678 SX-ADJ also provides over-current protection to ensure that the output current does not exceed the specified limit. This is accomplished by monitoring the current sense pin to the output switch. If the output current exceeds the current limit, the output switch is disabled and a reset signal is provided. This feature is useful in applications where input over-voltage protection and output over-current protection are needed.

The LM2678 SX-ADJ is a versatile, low-cost option for distributed power system applications requiring accurate, variable output voltage and low quiescent current. Its adjustable current limit and over-current protection features make it suitable for applications requiring both input and output power management.
