LM2660M is a synchronous 3A step-down DC-DC controller designed for energy efficient desktop, notebook and PC motherboard applications. The device operates at a single-input voltage from 3.3 V to 25 V and provides an adjustable output voltage from 0.625 V to the input voltage minus 0.8V. The device provides an accuracy of ±2.95% @25°C averaged over line, load, and temperature. The integrated high-switching frequency PWM operates up to 2.2 MHz allowing the use of small size components and allowing applications to fit within tightly regulated enclosures.

The LM2660M is equipped with key features such as PLL enable, pin selectable between pulse-skipping and pulse-frequency-modulation mode, integrated soft-start and charge pump, integrated over-temperature, over-current protection and UVLO. In line with the device\'s high power efficiency rating is the chip enable input, which allows the device to output zero current in disabled state. The LM2660M also provides an output voltage tracking by driving the tracking pin. The flexibility of the LM2660M helps to reduce total component cost and time to market.

LM2660M Application Field:

The LM2660M is a high performance step-down DC-DC controller that can be tailored to a wide variety of DC-DC applications. LM2660M is particular suitable for notebook and desktop computer application,The output current can reach up to 3A and the input voltage range is from 3.3V to 25V while the output voltage range is from 0.6V to the input voltage minus 0.8V. The device also integrates many features such as PLL enable, soft-start, output voltage tracking and protection circuits making it suitable for a large range of devices and system.

LM2660M Working Principle:

The LM2660M synchronous step-down DC-DC controller provided a simple and cost-effective solution for high-efficiency DC-DC power conversion. The controller can accept input voltages from 3.3V to 25V and outputs an adjustable voltage from 0.625V to the VIN minus 0.8V. The LM2660M employs a high switching frequency PLL mode or a pin selectable pulse-skipping mode to reduce the component size and heatsink. The internal over-temperature protection and integrated over-current protection (OCP) help provide system stability and reliability without external component requirements. In addition, the chip enable input allows the device to output zero current in disabled state.

The setting of the output voltage can be easily done by an external voltage divider. By varying the voltage on the adjustment pin Vadj, the voltage on the output can be adjusted. The Vadj also can be tied to tracking pin to follow system voltage changing or be used to select one of the internal programmed voltages. The device also can be used with an external Programmable Voltage Reference Device to provides a precision output voltage and trim.

In the switching mode, The LM2660M contains an oscillator and logic circuits to modulate the duty cycle and frequency required to regulate the output voltage. When the voltage detector senses that the output voltage has dropped below the preset level, a signal is sent to the logic circuit which then causes the MOSFET to turn on. This causes the inductor current rising and voltage starts to increment on the output, which is monitored by the voltage detector. When the sensed output voltage is above the preset regulated voltage level, the logic circuit will turn off the MOSFET and the current starts to decline. This cycle continues until the load demand is satisfied.

The LM2660M also contains an internal Soft-Start circuit which helps to reduce the inrush peak current. In addition, an additional feature called Forced Pulse-Skipping (FPS) mode which is designed to provide dynamic response to line or load transients and to reduce output ripple. This mode can be enabled through the PLL enable pin. The maximum output current capability of the device can be easily set by current limit of the external MOSFET.
