The LM2673SD-5.0 is a two-terminal monolithic switching regulator specifically designed to meet the demand of modern circuitry. This device offers a fixed output voltage of +5 volts and a wide input range of 3.3 to 26 volts. The LM2673SD-5.0 is ideal for both step-up and step-down conversion in a wide range of power supply applications.

The LM2673SD-5.0 uses high frequency switching MOSFETs to efficiently produce a regulated output voltage from a lower voltage input source. This high frequency converter offers a fast transient response and a wide range of output current up to 2.5 amps. The device is essentially a "current mode" DC-DC converter with an internal oscillator. The LM2673SD-5.0 offers fast dynamic response to line and load changes as well as excellent line and load regulation. It also features an adjustable dead time control and an internal soft start.

The LM2673SD-5.0 features integrated internal circuit protection functions including over current, over voltage and thermal protection. The LM2673SD-5.0 incorporates the ability to adjust the switching frequency by adding an external capacitor and resistor. This allows the user to optimize the size, cost and efficiency of the external power components while avoiding extreme EMI radiation. The device also offers output synchronization and remote sensing capability.

The working principle of the LM2673SD-5.0 is based on an internal oscillator and the duty cycle (D) of the output stage. The duty cycle is continuously adjusted according to the magnitude of the feedback voltage compared to the output voltage. The internal feedback voltage is derived from the primary side of transformer, and the output voltage is monitored through the output stage. A positive current sense signal is generated at the primary side of the transformer, giving the control loop high sensitivity and fast response. The internal pulse-width modulation control circuit senses the load current and adjusts the on-time of the switching MOSFET accordingly. When the load current is large, the current sense signal will transition to its peak value, switching off the MOSFET and preventing it from current overload. This device includes an internal soft-start function which gradually ramps up the output voltage to the rated value. An external resistor and capacitor connected to the device can adjust the switching frequency.
