LM2674N-12/NOPB is a member of Texas Instruments’ family of Power Management Integrated Circuits (PMICs). This device is classified as a DC-DC switching regulator, a type of voltage regulator used to regulate the voltages of one or more power stages within a larger system. The LM2674N-12/NOPB accepts an input voltage of 4.5V with a minimum operating current of 0.5mA at 4.5V, making it an ideal choice for applications that require minimum power. It also can accept an input voltage as high as 40V, as well as an output voltage as low as 1.8V. The wide output voltage range makes the device suitable for a wide range of applications involving high-voltage conversion and regulation, such as electronic lighting, battery management, and motor control.
The operating temperature range of the LM2674N-12/NOPB is -40°C to +125°C, permitting its use in extreme temperatures. The device incorporates over-voltage protection and pulse-by-pulse current limiting. It also has a shut-down (SD) pin for improved power savings reducing the current to typically 1μA when the load is disconnected. Other features of this device include over-voltage protection, output short-circuit protection and thermal shutdown.
The LM2674N-12/NOPB’s core working principle involves the use of a control loop to adjust the output voltage. The device senses the output voltage and compares it to an internal reference voltage. If the output voltage is lower than the reference voltage, the device increases the on-time of the switch. This increases the current through the inductor and thus increases the output voltage. The switch’s on-time is regulated by a high-speed pulse-width modulation (PWM) controller operating in either fixed frequency current mode (FFCM) or Burst Mode™ control (BM2). FFCM mode offers improved efficiency and low output voltage ripple. BM2 mode utilizes lower operating frequencies to reduce switching losses, improving efficiency and stability, at light loads.
