The LM2679S-5.0 is a PMIC (Power Management IC) used as a DC DC switching regulator. It is part of the LM2679 family of switching regulators, which range from 3V to 5.5V and operate at frequencies up to 5MHz. The LM2679S-5.0 is specifically designed for applications where high accuracy and low power consumption are important.

The working principle of the LM2679S-5.0 is based on the switching of the devices internal two MOSFETs (Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistors).One of the MOSFETs acts as a high side switch, while the other acts as a low side switch. When a suitable voltage is applied to the gate of the high side MOSFET, it turns on, allowing current to flow through the MOSFET and power the LM2679S-5.0. When the low side MOSFET is turned on, current is sunk through the lower MOSFET, in turn providing an electrical path for the current flowing through the high side MOSFET. After the two MOSFETs switch due to their gates voltage, the current that is needed to feed the load is attained. In this configuration, the LM2679S-5.0 can regulate the voltage output of the circuit by adjusting the duty cycle (Amount of time the high side MOSFET is on) of the high side MOSFET.
The LM2679S-5.0 also has a wide range of protection features that helps protect against common problems such as overcurrent, over-voltage, and overtemperature. The On-chip Thermal Shutdown circuit monitors the temperature of the device, and if the device reaches a temperature above the thermal trip point (150C) the device will turn off in order to protect itself from further damage. The LM2679S-5.0 also offers under-voltage lockout, which prevents the device from turning on until the input voltage reaches a certain level. This prevents LC resonance and output overshoot.
The LM2679S-5.0 provides users with a high power density and low power consumption, making it an ideal choice for many applications. The wide input voltage range and adjustable switching frequency are also beneficial for applications that require a precise output.
