The LM3075EVAL implements an external feedback regulation loop to provide precise control and superior load, line and temperature regulation performances. The board is provided with two options to drive MOSFETs to achieve the desired voltage output. This application requires an external inductor to function. The LM3075EVAL board includes a test point for activating the PGOOD signal.
The operation of the LM3075EVAL, as with other DC-DC converters, is based on a buck converter. A buck converter is a step-down DC-to-DC converter. A buck converter works by taking a fixed input voltage, given in this case by the PC’s USB port, and by running it through an inductor, a diode, and a capacitor to create a regulated output voltage. When the input voltage is greater than the output voltage (in this case 5V, 12V, or 15V) a part of the input voltage is dropped on the inductor, then passes through the diode, and is finally stored in the capacitor.
The LM3075EVAL provides a variety of protection features. The integrated current-mode controller operates at a switching frequency up to a maximum of 1MHz, allowing the use of small external components. These protection features minimize the risk of damage in case of shorts on the output. The LM3075EVAL also features soft-start, hiccup/auto-recovery over-temperature protection, and over-current protection.
