Before understanding the LM3686TL-AADWEV application field and its working principle, one must first understand what an SMPS is. SMPS stands for switched mode power supplies - a type of power supply that relies on an arrangement of switching transistors rather than linear regulators. This allows for a much more efficient electrical system with a smaller physical size and weight.By using high-frequency switching technology, the LM3686TL-AADWEV is capable of a power factor of 0.8, and has a wide input voltage range from 90-265VAC. Furthermore, the LM3686TL-AADWEV provides a compact solution with low power loss to generate multiple outputs for any given output voltage.The LM3686TL-AADWEV offers various features and functions in three different application fields: ITE (IT Equipment), Consumer applications, and Solar applications. In ITE applications, the LM3686TL-AADWEV provides improved AC/DC PF performance, due to the new operating schemes and protection integrated into the IC. It also reduces ripple and power consumption across the load. By using a single-stage approach, it simplifies the design and at the same time increases efficiency.In consumer applications, the LM3686TL-AADWEV provides stability and reliability in extreme environmental conditions such as cold, heat, and humidity. It also offers a high ripple rejection ratio to suppress transient voltage spikes. Furthermore, it offers a wide input voltage range from 90-265VAC.In solar applications, the LM3686TL-AADWEV is capable of providing a high efficiency and a low standby power consumption at very low load. It also offers overvoltage protection, UVLO, OVP, and OCP protection.The LM3686TL-AADWEV also has a working principle which is divided into three phases: The startup phase begins with the application of Vcc voltage, during which the VBG pin is current limited and VCC ramp up. Once the voltage on the VBG pin is equal to VCC, the internal error amplifier gain is set to unity gain and switching runs at full frequency.During the PWM phase, the internal error amplifier compares the available voltage reference to the output voltage feedback signal from the external resistive divider. The output voltage can be adjusted by setting the referenceThe standby/shutdown phase is initiated when the discharge pin is pulled low. The internal error amplifier gain decreases to 0, and the switching is stopped.The LM3686TL-AADWEV is an excellent choice for designing and evaluating power supplies.
