PMIC - Battery Chargers
Battery charging is a critical component of many electronic devices, allowing users to maintain the charge of their devices over time. The LM3622AMX-4.2 is a Power Management IC (PMIC) designed to provide efficient charging of Li-ion/ Li-polymer battery packs in portable electronics applications such as mobile phones, navigational systems and other handheld devices.

The LM3622AMX-4.2 is a high-efficiency, low cost, Li-ion/ Li-Polymer battery charger module for use in mobile phones and other applications. The LM3622AMX-4.2 incorporates a primary side control architecture that eliminates the optocoupler and external loop compensation components common in other PMIC charger solutions. This PMIC is suitable for both TA (Thermal adaptation) and IUO (Input/ Output) charging topologies, which makes it compatible with various AC/DC power adapters and USB chargers.
The LM3622AMX-4.2 utilizes proprietary charge algorithms designed to maximize the accuracy and safety of the charging process; providing a programmable range of 4.2V to 5.6V charging. Factory calibrated resistor setting options are available to adjust ICHG, VFLT, VBAT, and the battery temperature monitoring feature. In addition, several LED indicators have been included to indicate charging status.
Working Principle of the LM3622AMX-4.2
The PMIC LM3622AMX-4.2 implements a MAXIM automatically adaptive control algorithm based on a Pierce frequency-divider network to provide a programmable-precision charging process. The algorithms ensure an efficient, low-power charging process without requiring manual or laborious adjustments. The LM3622AMX-4.2 features two additional safety features for enhanced user safety.
The first feature, Input OVP (Overvoltage Protection), monitors the input voltage to protect the PMIC and the system in case of unexpected high voltage attach to the power source. The second feature, Thermal Adaptation, reduces the charger output current as the die temperature increases in order to prevent any potential damage due to thermal runaway.
In addition, the LM3622AMX-4.2 supports termination, enabling an efficient charging process without overcharging. Termination is achieved when the battery voltage reaches 4.20 V, or a programmable VFLT (Voltage Fault) voltage of 2.4 V, for safety. When termination is detected, the charger enters sleep mode.
