Comparators are practical components with a wide range of applications in a variety of fields, from analog computing and digital logic gate circuits to automotive controllers, digital sensors and even process control systems. Compared with other types of integrated circuits, like logic gates or linear integrated circuits, comparators are characterized by the fact that they are able to compare two analog input signals, one of them being reference voltage and the other the input voltage, to determine whether the input voltage is higher or lower than the reference voltage.

The LM393DT Comparator is an precision field effect transistor (FET) type device that is specifically designed to deal with this task, by providing two high-gain voltage comparators. This comparator can easily switch between two voltage levels whose difference is greater than the maximum difference between its two input voltages. It has a voltage rating of 5V and features operational amplifiers for ultra-low-power usage.

The LM393DT works by comparing a reference voltage source with the input voltage across two high-impedance input circuits. The comparator uses an efficiency FET type MOSFET, the output stage of which is connected directly to the voltage source. When the two input voltages reach a certain level, the output stage is switched on and off, resulting in a high or low output level according to the input signal at the time.
