The LMK04100SQX/NOPB is a high-performance, micro-power frequency synthesizer for pure clock signal generation, suitable for a variety of applications where an excellent jitter and/or frequency agility performance is required. In this article we will discuss the applications for which it is designed, as well as its working principle.

The LMK04100SQX/NOPB is designed to provide either high-performance clock synthesis or jitter-attenuation in a very small, signal-integrity-rich package in the following applications:

It is designed to provide the best performance from both a jitter and frequency-agility perspective, with very low power consumption. It also supports a wide range of commonly used network and interface communication protocols, clock speeds and data rates.

The LMK04100SQX/NOPB operates by using a set of industry-standard phase-locked loop (PLL) techniques to synthesize very stable and accurate frequencies. This is achieved by first multiplying the input reference signal to increase or decrease its frequency. The output of this phase-locked loop is then compared to an external, desired frequency. If the output of the phase-locked loop is off, either because of jitter or frequency drift, then the loop will output an error signal that is used to modify the loop until the desired output frequency is achieved.

The LMK04100SQX/NOPB also contains a number of features to ensure that jitter is minimized and the output is as accurate as possible. These features include a temperature-stabilized PLL block, a low-skew voltage-controlled oscillator, an optimized timing circuitry, and a selectable output buffer. The combination of these features ensures the delivery of a safe, low-jitter output signal that is tuned to the exact frequency desired.

The LMK04100SQX/NOPB also supports a wide range of integrated functions, such as a wide input voltage range (1.62V to 3.6V), programmable reference divider and phase offset, configurable channel skew, and an integrated low noise voltage regulator. These features allow designers to quickly and easily implement custom clock synthesis and jitter attenuation designs with minimal external components or design time.
