1. Describe
The LMZ14201HTZ/NOPB SIMPLE SWITCHER® Power Module is an easy-to-use step-down DC-DC solution capable of driving loads up to 1A with excellent power conversion efficiency, line and load regulation, and output accuracy. The product is packaged in an innovative package that improves thermal performance and allows hand or machine soldering. The LMZ14201HTZ/NOPB accepts input voltage rails between 6 V and 42 V and provides adjustable and high precision output voltages down to 5 V. The LMZ14201HTZ/NOPB requires only three external resistors and four external capacitors to complete the power supply solution. The LMZ14201HTZ/NOPB is a reliable and robust design with the following protections: thermal shutdown, input undervoltage lockout, output overvoltage protection, short circuit protection, output current limit, and allows start-up to pre-biased outputs. A single resistor adjusts the switching frequency up to 1 MHz.

6. Function Description
1. Output Overvoltage Comparator
The voltage on FB is compared to an internal reference voltage of 0.92V. If FB rises above 0.92 V, the on-time terminates immediately. This condition is called overvoltage protection (OVP). This can happen if the input voltage suddenly rises or the output load drops suddenly. Once the OVP is activated, the top MOSFET on-time is disabled until the condition clears. Additionally, the synchronous MOSFET will remain on until the inductor current drops to zero.
2. Current limit
Current limit detection is performed by monitoring the current in the synchronous MOSFET during turn-off. When the top MOSFET is turned off, the inductor current flows through the load, the PGND pin and the internal synchronous MOSFET. If this current exceeds the ICL value, the current limit comparator will disable the start of the next on-time period. The next switching cycle occurs only when the FB input falls below 0.8 V and the inductor current falls below ICL. Inductor current is monitored during synchronous MOSFET conduction. As long as the inductor current exceeds ICL, there will be no further on-time intervals for the top MOSFET. Due to the longer off-time, the switching frequency during current limit is lower.
3. Thermal Protection
The junction temperature of the LMZ14201HTZ/NOPB should not exceed its maximum ratings. Thermal protection is implemented by an internal thermal shutdown circuit that activates at 165°C (typ), putting the device into a low-power standby state. In this state, the main MOSFET remains off, causing VO to drop and additionally the CSS capacitor to discharge to ground. Thermal protection helps prevent catastrophic failure due to unexpected overheating of equipment. When the junction temperature falls back below 145 °C (typ. Hyst = 20 °C), the SS pin is released, VO rises smoothly, and normal operation resumes.
4. Zero coil current detection
The current of the lower (synchronous) MOSFET is monitored by a zero coil current detection circuit, which inhibits the synchronous MOSFET until the next on-time when the current of the synchronous MOSFET reaches zero. The circuit supports DCM operation, which improves efficiency at light loads.
5. Pre-bias start
The LMZ14201HTZ/NOPB will start up correctly to the pre-biased output. This start-up condition is common in multirail logic applications, where there may be current paths between different power rails during the start-up sequence. The pre-bias level of the output voltage must be less than the input UVLO set point. This will prevent the output regulator from being pre-biased by the body diode of the high side MOSFET.
