LMZ20502EVM (Evaluation Module) offers an outstanding performance in the field of DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS (Switched Mode Power Supply). This device is offered as an example of a simple, yet highly efficient design made with a duo of small, re-programmable components which can provide output power up to 400W without any special design modifications. These two components are the LMZ20502 and the LMX2531.
The basic working principle of LMZ20502EVM is to generate and control an AC voltage through a switching technique. This enables the LMZ20502EVM to convert a low voltage input DC signal into a higher voltage output with high accuracy and efficiency. The most important benefit that comes from this device is its impressive power levels and output current capability. It can provide output power up to 400W with no additional design modifications.
The LMZ20502 consists of a single high-side and low-side power MOSFET and a programmable sense resistor in order to detect the current and adjust the switching frequency based on the current. The LMX2531 is a high-speed clock generator that can generate up to 15MHz of output frequency independently of the system clock. Both these devices are connected to a microcontroller. The microcontroller will provide the necessary commands to the series control which can be used to generate the required precision current limit value corresponding to the desired output voltage.
In order to maximize the efficiency of the device the switching frequency is kept high with the help of the programmable clock. The high-speed internal clock, provided by the LMX2531, allows the system to maintain this high switching frequency and hence achieve high efficiency. This high switching frequency is also advantageous for transient response and prevention of output inrush current.
The device also incorporates the Overvoltage Protection (OVP) and Undervoltage Protection (UVP) feature. These features are designed to protect the SMPS from accidental voltage spikes or voltage drops during operation. If an overvoltage or undervoltage condition is detected, the device will temporarily shut off the output voltage and its output current will be kept under control. The output voltage will be safely restored once the detected voltage has gone back to the normal operating range.
The LMZ20502EVM can be used in a wide variety of applications and products which includes smart grid, telecom power supplies, industrial DC/DC converters, LED lighting and automotive DC/DC converters. The device can also be used in products that require high power output such as wireless base stations, energy storage systems and uninterruptible power supplies.
