Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are polarized, electrolytic-type capacitors whose anode electrode is made up of a pure aluminum foil with an etched surface and covered with a non-conducting, high-dielectric oxide layer. The cathode electrode is usually a contrast-rich material, usually aluminum oxide. The electrolytic capacitor consists of an anode and a cathode that are raised above and below a soaked electrolyte consisting of a solution containing atoms of silver and the anions of the acid used. The electrical layer in between the anode and the cathode is referred to as the “electric double layer”, and this can never completely completely separate the two electrodes.
The electrolytic capacitor’s working principle is based on the electro-chemical properties of the electrolyte. Strong electrostatic forces of attraction exist between the electrodes and the electrolyte, and this allows it to store large amounts of electrical energy. An electric current (electrons) travels from the anode to the cathode, resulting in a buildup of charges on the anode (negative on the cathode and positive on the anode). When the current is reduced, the charges dissipate slowly and the resulting energy is stored in the electrolyte until it is needed again.
