Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors: LNK2H182MSEG application field and working principle

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors (ELC) are the most commonly used type of capacitor in modern circuits. They are small in size, offer a wide capacitance range and come in a variety of package styles. In addition, they offer high operating temperatures, low ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) and good reliability. The LNK2H182MSEG is a popular aluminum electrolytic capacitor used in many circuits and equipment.The LNK2H182MSEG is a radial-lead aluminum electrolytic capacitor and its dielectric material is aluminum oxide. It is characterized by a long lifetime and excellent reliability. This capacitor has a bipolar capacitance of 18uF and voltage range of 20-450VDC, a maximum operating temperature of 105C and ESR of 0.030 Ohm. It is widely used in areas such as power supplies, motor control circuits, switching and linear circuits and filtering applications. The capacitor can also withstand temperature cycling and other severe environmental applications.The basic construction of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is a two-layer cylindrical structure wrapped with an insulating paper sleeve. Each layer of the sleeve is referred to as the anode and cathode, with the dielectric material deposited between them. The anode and cathode layers are connected to the outside electrical circuit via two leads, whereas the internal structure includes the formation of an oxide film between the electrodes, referred to as the electrolyte. This film provides the necessary dielectric material which causes a capacitive property when voltage is applied across the terminals.When voltage is applied to the two terminals of the capacitor, an electric field is set up between them causing current to flow through the electrolyte film, which is less resistive than the air. This current creates positive ions (cations). These cations are electrostatically attracted to the anode side of the capacitor and adhere to it simultaneously forming an insulating oxide layer and an electric double layer. This oxide layer provides better insulation of the capacitor and prevents leakage of current.When the capacitor is discharged, the cations physically separate themselves from the anode layer and cross to the other layer, the cathode. The thickness of the oxide layer depends on the operating voltage and temperature. The higher the temperature, the faster the oxide forms. As the electric charge builds on the electrodes, the capacitance of the capacitor is produced. This capacitance is proportional to the thickness of the oxide layer and the surface area of the electrodes.In summary, the LNK2H182MSEG aluminum electrolytic capacitor offers excellent performance for a wide variety of applications, due to its bipolar capacitance, operating temperature range, and ESR characteristics.
