This current creates positive ions (cations). These cations are electrostatically attracted to the anode side of the capacitor and adhere to it simultaneously forming an insulating oxide layer and an electric double layer. This oxide layer provides better insulation of the capacitor and prevents leakage of current.When the capacitor is discharged, the cations physically separate themselves from the anode layer and cross to the other layer, the cathode. The thickness of the oxide layer depends on the operating voltage and temperature. The higher the temperature, the faster the oxide forms. As the electric charge builds on the electrodes, the capacitance of the capacitor is produced.
