In terms of AC-DC converters and offline switchers, the LNK520GN-TL is a highly integrated power conversion integrated circuit for low-power AC/DC power supplies. It is designed to provide highly precise and efficient power supply solutions for a broad range of consumer and industrial applications.
Application
The LNK520GN-TL can be applied in a broad range of AC-DC offline power supply applications, such as LCD/LED TV/monitor, DVD/Blu-ray/set-top box, gaming/video console, computer/laptop adapter, AC/DC power supplies and so on.
Working principle
The LNK520GN-TL contains an avalanche-rugged 600V MOSFET, which allows the device to achieve a wide input voltage range. The rectified AC voltage is used to charge the boost inductor L1. The discharge of this inductor is rectified, filtered and regulated for output voltage. The operating frequency is sensed by the +FB pin. This allows the device to automatically adjust the switching frequency under load depending on the load current.
In steady state operation, the inductor current increases until it reaches its peak current limit, then begins to decrease, and finally turns off the MOSFET Q1. During the ON-time, VCC will be provided to the control circuit, otherwise the control circuit will enter the stand-by mode. The ON-time is determined by the external compensation network and the peak current limit voltage. When there is no load or light load, the switching frequency will be kept around 60~120KHz, and the peak current limit will be increased and the inductor current is also increased accordingly.
Over-voltage protection is one of the main features of the device, it can effectively protect the equipment from potential damage caused by a surge voltage caused by the AC power mains. Furthermore, the LNK520GN-TL also has short-circuit protection and thermal shutdown protection. The device also has an over current protection feature that limits the load current to a safe limit.
The LNK520GN-TL is also capable of providing over-voltage protection, under-voltage protection and brown-in protection, with the brown-in protection preventing an unintentional startup of the system at a low input voltage. Furthermore, the device can provide peak current limit protection and cycle-by-cycle overload protection, which limits the peak current and maintains system operation until the fault condition is resolved.
The device also has a low power consumption in standby mode and in all operating conditions, thereby minimizing power consumption. It also has a low voltage standby feature that can be used in conjunction with the over-voltage protection circuitry to reduce power consumption when no load is present.
The LNK520GN-TL is also capable of providing an accurate soft-start feature, which improves system stability and prevents excessive inrush current during startup. The soft start also limits system stress at startup and reduces the need for transient protection elements.
