The working principle of an aluminium electrolytic capacitor is very simple. When a voltage is applied between the two aluminium plates, a small amount of current will flow and the capacitor plates will form an extremely thin layer of oxide from the electrolyte on the aluminium surface. This oxide layer is the dielectric (insulating material) which will be used to store a certain amount of energy as a charge when a certain voltage is applied across the capacitor\'s terminals.

The positive side of the capacitor is taken to be the side which has a higher voltage applied across its terminals. The positive electrode forms the anode side while the negative side is the cathode side and the aluminium oxide layer is the dielectric between them. The oxide layer is very thin and thus it takes in a very small amount of current to charge the capacitor. So once it is charged, it will store the energy until the voltage applied across its terminals is below a certain threshold.
