Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Working Principle

An aluminum electrolytic capacitor is made of two metal plates separated by a porous, oxidized membrane called a dielectric. The two plates are connected to opposite poles of a power source. When a current is applied, positive ions move toward the negative plate and negative ions move toward the positive plate. This creates an electric field between the two plates. As current flows from one plate to the other, it creates a voltage across the capacitor.

The capacitance of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is determined by two factors: the thickness of the aluminum oxide dielectric layer and the surface area of the positive and negative plates.
