The LP5951MGX-1.8 is a low dropout linear regulator (LDO) with an extremely low quiescent current for portable applications such as cellular and wireless handsets. This integrated circuit (IC) is designed to supply a low ripple, regulated output voltage with 180 mA output current capability. It is a member of Texas Instruments’ (TI) extensive family of high performance voltage regulators, which are highly integrated integrated circuits with considerable functionality and flexibility.The LP5951MGX-1.8 works on the principle of controlling the output voltage by controlling the voltage drop across a pass transistor. The LP5951MGX-1.8 uses an internal pass transistor, in order to provide a low dropout, which improves system efficiency and extends battery life. The transistor is operated in a voltage-to-current control mode, which allows for a wide range of output voltage and current values, while providing high performance over the entire operating range. The LP5951MGX-1.8 also features adjustable output voltage, over voltage protection, and current limiting to ensure safe and reliable operation.The LP5951MGX-1.8 can provide regulated output currents up to 180 mA continuously with dropout voltages as low as 225 mV at full load. This makes the LP5951MGX-1.8 ideal for applications that require a low-noise, low-power solution, such as digital or RF power supplies. In addition, the low output noise of the LP5951MGX-1.8 makes it suitable for use in audio applications. The LP5951MGX-1.8 is also well suited for use in ultra-low-power systems, with a quiescent current typically between 10–20 µA and a shutdown current of <1 µA.The LP5951MGX-1.8 is available in an 8-pin SOT-23 package, making it an ideal choice for space-constrained applications. TI further expands the features available from the LP5951MGX-1.8 with several other variants, the LP5951MFX-1.8 and the LP5951MGX-1.9. These variants include optimized shutdown current (<0.5 µA), reverse current protection, overtemperature protection, and adjustable turn-on delay.The LP5951MGX-1.8 is designed to work over an input voltage range of 2.5 V to 6.0 V, and can output voltage ranging from 1.2 V to 5.5 V. Its excellent line and load regulation makes it suitable for applications where high accuracy is desired, with an output voltage accuracy typically better than 1%. The LP5951MGX-1.8 also features a very low output noise level of 15 µVRMS, making it an ideal choice for RF and other noise-sensitive applications.
