They are widely used in a variety of electronic circuits for various purposes, including filtering, voltage regulation, resonance, tuning, and bypassing. Working PrincipleIn a LQR2V272MSEFBN aluminum electrolytic capacitor, two aluminum electroplates are separated from each other by a layer of porous, chemically treated paper that is soaked in an electrolyte. One of the aluminum plates is usually stamped or etched with a positive symbol to indicate that it is the positive electrode of the capacitor, known as the anode. The other aluminum plate is stamped or etched with a negative symbol and serves as the negative electrode, known as the cathode. Anode and cathode are connected through the electrolyte layer which separates them, forming a capacitor. When a voltage is applied to the capacitor, a current flows through the capacitor, which causes electrons to move from the anode to the cathode. This movement of electrons creates a static electric field that accumulates excess positive charge on the anode and excess negative charge on the cathode. In this process, the anode and cathode develop opposite charges which in turn create an electrostatic field between them, producing an electric potential. This electric field, known as the capacitance of the capacitor, is a measure of the capacitor’s ability to store electric charge. The capacitance of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is determined not only by the geometry of the aluminum electrodes and electrolyte layer, but also by the voltage that is applied to it. Aluminum electrolytic capacitors also have a relatively high leakage current, which is the electrical current that flows through the capacitor even after the voltage has been removed.
