Motion Sensors - IMUs (Inertial Measurement Units) are a type of electronic device that contain an integrated system of sensors used to measure motion parameters such as acceleration, angular velocity, and heading. One of the most popular motion sensors - IMUs is the LSM303DTR. This device consists of two sensors: an accelerometer and a magnetometer.
The LSM303DTR is used in a variety of applications ranging from navigation systems to robotic and autonomous vehicle operations. Its small physical size, low power consumption, and robust algorithms make it ideal for many mobile applications. The device can measure both linear and angular motion in three axes simultaneously and is accurate over a wide range of operation conditions.
The working principle of the LSM303DTR is based on the measurement of the force exerted by an external magnetic field on a semiconductor material. The device makes use of a multiaxis Hall Effect sensor which consists of four oxidized silicon slabs. Each slab is covered with a thin semiconductor which responds to an external magnetic field.
The four slabs are connected in a Wheatstone bridge arrangement which allows the device to measure the magnetic field intensity in three directions (x, y, and z). The LSM303DTR also contains a low noise amplifier, a programmable gain amplifier, and a temperature sensor which are utilized to measure magnetic field intensity in all directions. The device also contains a 12-bit ADC which is used to digitize the signal.
The LSM303DTR also has a built-in, quaternion-based sensor fusion algorithm. This algorithm takes data from the accelerometer, magnetometer, and temperature sensor and combines it into a single quaternion-based calculation. This calculation is then used to calculate the device’s orientation and heading.
The LSM303DTR also includes an onboard programmable filter which removes extraneous sensor noise and provides a clean data output. This allows the device to accurately measure event parameters in various environments. The LSM303DTR is an ideal choice for a variety of motion sensing applications such as vehicle navigation, robotic motion control, and autonomous systems.
