LT3971EMSE-5#PBF is an advanced monolithic synchronous step-down DC–DC switching regulator. It is designed to supply high current while efficiently converting a wide input voltage (2.5V to 34V) to a regulated output voltage as low as 0.5V. It integrates a high-side N-MOSFET and a low-side P-MOSFET capable of delivering up to 6A continuous output current. The LT3971EMSE-5#PBF is available in a 5mm × 6mm DFN-20 package for space sensitive applications.

The LT3971EMSE-5#PBF can be used to supply voltages for a multitude of general purpose applications. It can be used in a variety of power management solutions such as low-power driving circuits, portable electronic devices, automotive solutions and battery powered products. It is well suited for power conversion for embedded applications, especially those that require low voltage, low quiescent current and excellent load transient response.
Working Principles:
The LT3971EMSE-5#PBF works on the basic principles of switching power supplies. The input voltage is stepped down to the required output voltage as the switching converter oscillates between on and off states to determine the output levels. The duty cycle represents the amount of time the switch is on (in relation to the period) and thus determines the output voltage. The LT3971EMSE-5#PBF employs the constant on-time (or current-mode) control architecture, which is ideal for providing low output voltage ripple, excellent transient response and fast settling time even for large step changes in load current.
The switching frequency of the LT3971EMSE-5#PBF is also adjustable from 1kHz up to 6.5MHz, allowing the user to optimize the size, cost, and efficiency of their application. At higher frequencies, the smaller components enable more compact designs, but the efficiency degrades at high frequencies due to switching losses. In addition, the LT3971EMSE-5#PBF employs built-in synchronous rectification to maximize efficiency over a wide range of loads. This can be further optimized by programming the power-good threshold and soft-start ranges.
The LT3971EMSE-5#PBF provides extensive protection features such as short circuit protection, adjustable over-current protection, thermal shutdown and under-voltage lockout. These features together with the incorporation of a low output voltage capacitor and an inductor, make the LT3971EMSE-5#PBF an ideal choice for high-power, high efficiency DC–DC switching regulator applications.
