Working Principle of the LTC4088EDE-1#TRPBF

The LTC4088EDE-1#TRPBF (Figure 1) works with the following principle: when an input voltage is applied, it charges the battery withcurrent sourced from an external power source. The battery temperature is monitored by the internal thermistors, and the charging current and the charge voltage are regulated. The charge current is controlled by adjusting the duty cycle of a PWM signal by measuring the voltage drop across the sense resistor. The charge voltage is regulated by comparing the output voltage of the error amplifier with a reference voltage. When the battery is fully charged, the device will terminate the charging cycle.

The LTC4088EDE-1#TRPBF is designed to provide an efficient, cost-effective and safe charging solution for Li-Ion/Polymer battery packs. The device has an integrated power-path feature, which allows charging and/or draining of the battery at the same time. This feature also allows for a quick connection between the input power source and the battery for easy charging.The device also has safety features such as integrated input protection, thermal management, over-temperature protection, and battery timeout protection. The thermal protection feature ensures safe operation of the device by automatically switching off the output current when the device temperature exceeds an external set point. The battery time-out feature ensures that the charger will stop the charge cycle and switch off the output current if the battery is not charged within a predetermined time limit.The device also has integrated power-good monitoring and charge current regulation, which enable it to accurately monitor and regulate the output current of the charger to ensure safe operation and avoid overcharging of the battery.
