Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are electrical components that store energy as an electric field. They consist of two aluminum foils that are separated by an ionic dielectric – an electrolyte. The LXY16VB562M16X40LL series of aluminum electrolytic capacitors are designed especially for snubber applications. It offers a very high energy density for a wide temperature range, over 165°C. These capacitors are available with a voltage rating of up to 560V and a capacitance up to 40uF. The applications for this series includes switch mode power supplies (SMPS), rectifiers, AC motors and other electro-mechanical components.

The working principle of these capacitors is based on a property of aluminum known as anodic polarization. This is the electrochemical process whereby electrons in the aluminum are attracted to the positive layer of the di-electrical material, creating a polarized electric field. The di-electrical material in these capacitors is an electrolytic solution containing a dissolved salt. As voltage is applied to the capacitors, positive ions move towards the negative electrode and negative ions move towards the positive electrode. This movement of ions creates an electrical field that stores energy which can then be released when the voltage is removed.

The aluminum electrolytic capacitor is subject to aging due to the electrolyte drying out at elevated temperatures. As the electrolyte evaporates, the capacitance of the device decreases over time. To reduce the chances of this happening, these capacitors are usually only suitable for applications with a working temperature of up to 165°C. Additionally, they should not be subjected to reverse polarity or excessive voltage.

The LXY16VB562M16X40LL aluminum electrolytic capacitors offer a very high energy density for snubber applications due to their low ESR and ripple current, and can be used in a wide range of applications. They offer very good stability with excellent conductivity and mechanical shock resistance.
