The TRIAC is the generic term used to describe a family of three terminals, functioning as a semiconductor device mainly used to manage AC power. They are capable of turning on and off, allowing AC current to flow in both directions, providing switching and phase control in electronic circuits. The two main types of TRIACs are phase control TRIACs and phase angles TRIACs. The MAC4DSM-1G is a phase control TRIAC designed for power control in various applications.
The MAC4DSM-1G is designed for versatile AC power control applications and can be used in various domestic and industrial products, such as home appliances, lamps, motors, AC heaters, defrosting systems, heaters and induction motors. This TRIAC has a multiplexed parallel electrical configuration and consists of a single integrated package with four SCRs, while controlling AC power up to 1 ampere of rms continuous current. It belongs to the previous generation of TRIACs, with a main feature being the ability to adjust the conduction angle with a wide range of 0° to 360°.
The working principle of this TRIAC is that when the MT1 terminal is positive with respect to the MT2 terminal, the device will not conduct until the voltage between MT1 and MT2 reaches an appropriate value, called the “trigger voltage”. The amount of current passing through the device is determined by the value of the resistance connected to the MT1 terminal. Once the trigger voltage has been reached, the device will start conducting and will remain in conduction until the applied voltage between phase terminals MT1 and MT2 drops below the holding voltage.
Moreover, the gate control for the MAC4DSM-1G can be achieved using various logic devices, such as, TTL logic, P-Mosfet gates, N-Mosfet gates, optocouplers, and more. The typical gate resistors values can range from 1kΩ to 10kΩ. This TRIAC also features protection mechanisms such as, natural thermal shutdown and transient overvoltage protection, and a built-in adapter circuit which provides class-B operation
