Working Principle

The working principle of the MALCE17AE3 is based on the combination of two components; a PNP silicone transistor and a common anode zener diode. This device is designed to provide a low impedance path to divert surge voltages away from the protected device. The PNP transistor acts as an open switch when the surge voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage of the zener diode. When the surge exceeds the breakdown level of the diode, the transistor turns on and supplies an alternative path for the current to flow, protecting the device from potential harm due to the surge.

When the surge level exceeds the breakdown voltage of the diode, the current flows through the transistor and the diode, allowing the current to be diverted away from the sensitive electronics and dissipated to ground. Once the surge has passed, the device automatically resets to its normal state. This allows for a fast recovery from the potentially dangerous over-voltage situation.
